Charles Gounod’s Faust
How much Faust can a theatre-goer take? Do prototypical stories such as that of a man who sells his soul to the Devil for eternal youth, love and knowledge never get old? Bear with us. Not us, per se, but the National Greek Opera. Charles Gounod’s Faust, a twist on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s classic work, focuses on Marguerita, the woman whose ill-fashioned love for Faust drives her to her destruction. Surely there’s a similar-minded anti-Valentine’s flick somewhere on Netflix, but we suggest you opt for this masterstroke opera production.
Athens has already embraced Goundo’s Faust with a series of sold-out performances at The Athens Concert Hall back in 2012 and we’re guessing its return will follow suit.
