Chisel and Memory: Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis is one of mankind’s finest moments. Athens’ world-famous icon is not some frozen-in-time phenomenon, however. Down the centuries, countless workers and craftsmen have laboured with pride, precision and passion to preserve and restore this millennia-old monument. Through their self-denial, co-operation, labour and companionship, their humanity has seeped into every marble block and column. In tribute to this human essence, the Acropolis Museum is displaying an uplifting showcase of photographs that document the past 40 years of restoration works. Marble craftsmen dominate the worksite, like forms in flight balancing on towering scaffolds, maneuvering huge blocks of marble and conservation materials into position. Equally impressive are the images that capture the craftsmen's techniques, embodying centuries-old expertise, alongside state of the art technologies. The free exhibition is part of the Acropolis Museum’s eleventh anniversary celebrations.
