Cultural Exchange Rate
The cruelest borders are the ones invisible to the eye. So believes Lebanese live artist Tania El Khoury who presents a searing x-ray into the universal (and never-ending) story of migration through an interactive dive into her own family’s diary. In “Cultural Exchange Rate”, El Khoury shares her family memoirs of life in a border village between Lebanon and Syria. Their tale is marked by war survival, valueless currency collection, brief migration to Mexico, and a river that disregards colonial and national borders. Based on recorded interviews with the artist’s late grandmother and oral histories collected in her village in Akkar, you'll be invited to explore the sounds, images, and textures of more than a century of border crossings. The performance is on at contemporary culture hub, Onassis Stegi, and has excerpts in English, Arabic, Spanish and Italian (with English sub-titles).
