Draped in Myths…and Empty Dresses

In an attempt to explore the evolving relationship between women and their attire, the Culture, Sports & Youth Organization of the City of Athens is hosting Kyriaki Christakopoulou's solo exhibition Draped in Myths…and Empty Dresses at the Aggeliki Chatzimichali Museum of Folk Art and Tradition. The exhibition consists of two sections. The first section features twelve mixed media works portraying women in traditional costumes, emphasising symbolic elements of non-verbal communication and identity. The second section showcases contemporary dresses that critique the lack of personal and cultural connection in modern mass-produced clothing. The Museum is in an old mansion in Plaka, an eminent example of modern Greek urban architecture from the interwar period that combines traditional elements with Neo-Byzantine and Macedonian styles. It houses a diverse collection of folk-art objects, including wood carvings, metalwork, pottery, traditional costumes, embroidery, and loom-woven rugs, as well as the archive and personal belongings of Aggeliki Chatzimichali, Greece’s first folklorist, who used to reside there.
