Women's Matters at the Athens Municipal Art Gallery
Women's Matters, supported by the Organisation for Culture, Sport and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), is the latest must-see exhibition at the Athens Municipal Art Gallery. It is a vibrant showcase of 17 talented Greek women artists from different generations, each of whom brings their own point of view to the fore. Through a variety of media, paintings, photos, sculptures, videos, and even live performances, each piece of work delves into themes such as violence against women, gender stereotypes and the female experience. Using literature, cinema and the news to create a narrative of women's condition, these artworks weave together both historical and contemporary issues.
The exhibition's title is an intricate play on three subjects: the word mater, Latin for mother; the Black Lives Matter movement; and feminist history and gender theory, as articulated by American philosopher Judith Butler in her seminal book Bodies that Matter. To see how it all fits together, all you have to do is visit the Metaxourgio gallery.
