Ghika: A Journey from West to East
Normally, you can explore the residence of Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, including his studio and personal quarters, which he generously donated to the Benaki Museum. This year, to mark 30 years since his passing, the museum is paying tribute to one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Greek art. Ghika’s work bridges Greek tradition, European avant-garde movements, and Sino-Japanese influences.
The exhibition, held at the Benaki Museum’s Piraeus Street annex, takes you through his transformative 1958 journey from the West to the East. As part of an educational exchange in Washington, Ghika travelled through New York, Arizona, Mexico, and Hawaii, before continuing on to Asia, where he visited Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand. This journey deeply impacted his work and worldview, which the exhibition explores through a collection of drawings, archival materials, and art pieces. His personal connection to Eastern art, as well as his love story with Barbara Warner, are highlighted through an interactive audiovisual experience.
