In the Shadow II at the Municipal Art Gallery of Athens

In the Shadow II reframes Greek female artists and brings them into the spotlight. It is the second instalment of an exhibition which showcases works from the collection of the Athens Municipal Gallery, exploring the role of women in 20th-century art. Located in the area of Metaxourgio, the gallery is a perfect starting point for an exploration of the neighbourhood’s vibrant art scene. 

This edition features 31 artists born between 1911 and 1941. Most are graduates of the Athens School of Fine Arts, though some pursued independent studies or trained at schools in Paris. The exhibition highlights notable figures in Greek engraving and abstract painting, and also includes artists who worked in mosaics, photography, illustration, decorative arts, and scenography.

The exhibition harmoniously presents the various artistic styles and inspirations ranging from landscapes and still lives to portraits, interior spaces, scenes of everyday life, and the female body. The assimilation of the prevailing movements of their time is evident throughout the show.
