Athens Epidaurus Festival 2022: Iphigenia in Aulis
There’s certainly a theme in this year’s Athens Epidaurus Festival: the Trojan War. Both seasoned pioneers and debutant directors will put up performances of Agamemnon, Ajax and Helen at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. But what about Iphigenia, you might ask. Greek actor and director Themis Moumoulidis has taken up the tale of Iphigenia, Agamemnon’s daughter, who is to be sacrificed to the goddess Artemis in order to win back her good graces, and winds, so that the Greek ships can continue their expedition to Troy. The King starts having doubts… but we won’t spoil how this goes (though it has been 2,500 years; you should have watched it by now.)
With English subtitles.
