Jazz and Artificial Intelligence: The Shimon Robot, the Idea and the Vision
-Come down, dinner’s ready!
-But moooom, I’m jamming with my robot friend!
Be honest: When growing up, how many times did you wish you had a cool robot friend? Georgia Tech professor Gil Weinberg made this dream a reality with the Shimon project.
Shimon is a four-armed robot musician who plays the marimba (a kind of xylophone), writes and sings his own songs and can improvise with his bandmates. Don’t believe us? He’s even got his own album on Spotify.
Shimon's impressive skill set will be demonstrated internationally for the first time at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron). Shimon and the rest of the Shimon crew will be performing in a jazz ensemble alongside Weinberg, internationally acclaimed composer and jazz researcher Dimitri Vassilakis.
Shimon visits Athens on the occasion of the ongoing collaborative research on the language of jazz between Georgia Tech, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) and the “Demokritos” National Centre for Scientific Research. Big brain stuff.
Our robot overlords might not be so bad after all. Also, we have a feeling that Iannis Xenakis would vibe to this.
