Karya 1943: Forced Labour and the Holocaust
In 2002 Andreas Assael, the son of a Holocaust survivor from Nazi-occupied Thessaloniki, stumbled upon a unique photographic collection at a flea market in Munich and unknowingly unearthed a rarely presented chapter of Greek history. This discovery became the foundation for an exhibition, which is also taking place in Germany, that explores the forced labour of Greek Jews during WWII, revealing the harrowing conditions they endured—many tragically perishing in Auschwitz in August 1943.
Eight compelling biographies of victims and survivors offer a deeply personal lens into this dark chapter of history. Additionally, a special presentation at the Jewish Museum of Greece will provide further documentation and insights about this historical narrative.
