Les fleurs du mâle
Gagosian presents Les fleurs du mâle, the first exhibition of Romuald Hazoumè in Greece. The Benin-born artist debuts at Gagosian’s Athens gallery, showcasing a powerful collection of paintings, sculptures, and photographs created over the past two decades.
Using materials like plastic containers, fishing nets, and feathers, Hazoumè transforms discarded objects into striking masks and faces. Drawing from African traditions, particularly Yoruba culture, his work highlights both the beauty and complexity of these influences while critically reflecting on the global fascination with African mask-making.
Evoking Baudelaire’s poem, the exhibition’s title plays on the contrast between mal (evil) and mâle (male), exploring masculinity’s role in shaping global conflicts.
