Athens Epidaurus Festival 2022: Mal - Embriaguez divina
Evil is a loaded topic. The Christian God created ten commandments to warn humans against it. Humanity created witch hunts to restrict it, then moral philosophy to contemplate on it. Choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas takes all that, and throws it out of the window in Mal – Embriaguez divina.
Evil is divine drunkenness, an essential part of self-transformation, artistic creation, she claims.
Monteiro Freitas (Silver Lion, Biennale di Venezia 2018) returns to the Athens Epidaurus Festival with her idiosyncratic take on contemporary dance, as witnessed in her earlier works “Bacchae” and “of ivory and flesh - statues also suffer”, and directs her nine dancers in an onstage ecstatic transformation.
If you take your dance performances like your coffee - dark - then check out Danse Macabre, too. You can see our picks of this year's Athens Epidaurus Festival here. For the full programme head over to the festival's official website.
