Tassos Mantzavinos: Me and the Dragon
For Tassos Mantzavinos, artistic inspiration has always sprung from what exists in the shadows, and within ourselves. This fêted Greek artist weaves together some of the defining strands of Greek folklore – from poetry to iconography and shadow puppetry. His latest body of work is imagined from the perspective of a powerful dragon, a popular creature in karagiozis shadow puppet theatre. See Mantzavinos' striking creations of tin, wood and other materials, foraged from Monastiraki flea market, transformed into mythical creatures that pop out from the depths of the inner world to reveal themselves in Kafka-esque interpretations. The show, on display at the Benaki Museum’s Ghika Gallery, is dedicated to the late Benaki Museum trailblazer Angelos Delivorrias.
