Mataroa on the Horizon
In late December 1945, the cruise liner Mataroa embarked on a remarkable journey. Having just transported Jewish survivors of the German concentration camps to Haifa, it set sail again—this time carrying Greek artists and scholars fleeing Athens. Bound for Paris, these passengers escaped political persecution during the Greek Civil War, and went on to shape European thought and science in profound ways.
This new production brings their historic journey to life through the fragmented memories of exile, identity, and hope. Featuring a talented cast of actors, dancers, and musicians, it is conceived and directed by renowned creator and composer Theo Abazis. An ambitious co-production between the Greek National Opera's Alternative Stage and the National Theatre of Greece, it also features an original score by Abazis in collaboration with celebrated composer Nikos Kypourgos.
