Werther by Jules Massenet
Operas love their tragic romances. Werther, the opera by Jules Massenet, a French composer of the Romantic era, is presented at the Greek National Opera under the baton of renowned maestro Jacques Lacombe. Loosely based on Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther, it tells the story of lovestruck young poet Werther and the object of his affections, Charlotte, who is married to another man. The doomed love affair ends with Werther taking his own life and Charlotte rushing to his side as he leaves his last breath.
One of the most outstanding mezzo-sopranos of our times, Anita Rachvelishvili, will be taking on the role of Charlotte. Francesco Demuro, who we saw last summer in GNO’s Rigoletto at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, will take on the role of Werther. This one sounds very, very promising.
