WOW Athens 2024
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, in collaboration with the WOW Foundation, is gearing up for the second annual Women of the World Athens edition, the international festival for women, femininities, and non-binary people. Last year's festival was a hit drawing in over 3,600 visitors and this time around WOW Athens is back with a bang. The festival boasts an exciting programme, including talks, workshops, film screenings, concerts, and more.
Watch fearless Nadya Tolokonnikova, leader of Pussy Riot, who’s not just an activist but also an award-winning artist, host a talk session. Join art historian, author, curator and broadcaster Katy Hessel for a conversation about great women artists and listen to author Deborah Levy share insights from her Living Autobiography trilogy.
Don't miss Manthia Diawara's film Angela Davis: A World of Greater Freedom about North American activist Angela Davis, or Peter W. Kunhardt's Gloria: In Her Own Words, about Gloria Steinem, a key figure in the feminist movement.
Discover outdoor exhibition Fulfilment, which brings to life the vision of the great contemporary sculptor Alex Mylonas; a celebration of female artistic creation and its connection to history, institutions, dreams and the breaking of boundaries. Then get ready to dance your heart out at the SNFCC Agora with local avant-garde musician Lou and drag persona Mary Sunshine for a guilty pleasure trip to the 80s. Don’t forget to check out the WOW Athens Marketplace, a buzzing hub of women-owned and non-binary-led businesses, charities, and activist organisations.
Also part of the festival (but not included in the pass mentioned below) is the stage reading of Prima Facie by Suzie Miller. A gripping play following the journey of Tessa, a fierce defence attorney, as she navigates the complexities of the legal system. Be sure to stick around after the reading for a discussion with the playwright herself. Just a heads up: the work touches on sensitive topics, so it's recommended for those aged 12 and over. Last but not least, Hania Rani, the talented musician who effortlessly blends pop, classical, and psychedelia with a touch of minimalism will also grace the festival with her presence. In her own words “everything can easily intertwine, and collate together; coexist. ”
Our pro tip is to opt for the WOW Athens festival pass that gives you access to most events (pre-registration is required) at a sliding scale price, and then book any other ones you are interested in.
