Semele
Much like his Greek equivalent Zeus, Jupiter had a habit of pursuing beautiful mortal women. One of his romantic liaisons was Semele, which was famously portrayed in Handel's opera. The story goes like this: The ever-jealous goddess Juno tricks Semele into meeting Jupiter in his divine form, an event no mortal could endure. In the end, Semele is burnt to a crisp by a thunderbolt, leaving behind her offspring with Jupiter, baby Bacchus. This famous opera caused quite a stir in its day because, despite its frivolous themes, it premiered during Lent. Semele is now being staged at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre in a co-production with the Göttingen International Handel Festival, which is focusing on Greek antiquity this year. George Petrou, the festival's artistic director and an expert on Handel, will conduct the opera. It features Swiss star soprano Marie Lys in the title role, and the music will be performed by early music experts, the Athens Municipal Symphony Orchestra and the Athens Chamber Choir.
