The Rose: Park Your Cinema
Can anyone listen to Bette Midler’s The Rose and not well up? Congratulations, you’re made of sterner stuff than us. Croon along to this epic Oscar-winning power ballad as the SNFCC wraps up its Park Your Cinema summer series of free outdoor screenings with Midler’s 1979 tour de force of the same name. Loosely based on the life of singer Janis Joplin, the movie shadows a self-destructive rock star of the sixties who struggles to cope with the pressures of fame and the demands of her ruthless manager. No auto tuner; no high definition voice synthesizer; just Midler and her electrifying charisma and vocals. Entrance is free, but visitors are advised to bring mosquito spray and something soft to sit on the lawn on (and don't forget the tissues!). There'll be a screening of a short film The Umbrella (2018) first.
