Casablanca
In the minds of many, Casablanca will forever be frozen as the stage of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s doomed romance. Alexandria-born and raised photographer Melita Vangelatou is consumed with a more authentic slice of this famous Moroccan city’s past. Vangelatou has turned her lens to capturing the myriad ways in which the colourful traditions of Casablanca endure in this modern cosmopolitan metropolis. Her vibrant photography exhibition, on display at the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art, highlights timeless tropes of everyday life: visiting the hammam, socialising in the streets, and the ever present street vendors and ambulating water sellers. Round off your visit by popping upstairs to the museum’s rooftop café to check out British artist Navine G. Khan-Dossos’ marvelous floor-to-ceiling palm tree mural and the cracking views over ancient Keramikos Cemetery.
