Calypso Rose
“Grandma, I want to marry you!”
– Young man in the audience during Calypso Rose’s last tour.
That's the effect that McCartha Linda Sandy Lewis has on people. The 79-year-old from Tobago is coming to Athens for the first time for an open air free concert at the Great Lawn of the SNFCC. The "mother of calypso" has released over 20 albums in her 50 year career, often adressing issues of sexism and racism through her lyrics—the first calypso artist to do so. Calypso Rose also has a new album coming up later this year, inspired by the Jamaican, African and South American music traditions, so be ready for some fresh afro-caribbean craze.
