George Zongolopoulos: The Vision of a Public Sculpture
They called him the “eternal teenager” and his iconic umbrellas forever transformed the waterfront of Greece’s second capital, Thessaloniki. Now, from the end of January until the end of May, you can enjoy the emblematic works of the famous Athenian sculptor George Zongolopoulos here in Athens as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre stages the first exhibition dedicated solely to Zongolopoulos’ epic public shapes. Eight sculptures will be displayed in the outdoor areas in the Agora and Rear Agora. Twelve further sculptures will be shown—four of them for the first time—on the 4th floor atrium of the National Library of Greece, along with various multi-media exhibits on Zongolopoulos (whose work spanned from the 1920s until shortly before his death in 2004).
