Vera Lutter: Fragments of Time Past
Imagine the Acropolis' white marbles glowing up against a dense black background. That’s exactly what happens in Vera Lutter’s new camera-obscura photographs. Gagosian Gallery Athens hosts the latest exhibition of the acclaimed New York-based German photographer, Fragments of Time Past.
Commissioned by The New York Times, the project features a photo series of reversed negatives of the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon, and Plato’s Academy, as well as Greek temples of Paestum, Italy, and classical statues of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The result is an imposing body of work that seeks to create a discourse between the shadows of the past and the means of photography. It’s been more than 15 years since Lutter’s last exhibition in Athens, so chances are there will be crowds at the Gagosian. We suggest planning it out along with an ouzo and meze at leafy Dexameni Square and turn a negative into a positive (sorry.)
