Ideal Cinema Nights
Let's start with some context. In the title, the word "Ideal" does not mean perfect or most suitable. But it also kind of does. We shall explain.
Ideal (or ΙΝΤΕΑΛ) was the name of a historic cinema in the centre of Athens which sadly closed down at the end of 2023. Premiere Nights, aka the Athens International Film Festival, used to host late-night (and sold-out) screenings of classics at Ideal. Now, with the closure of this beloved Athens cinema, these screenings will take place at Cinobo Opera cinema, the new kid on the block.
Cinobo began as an ambitious, entrepreneurial Greek startup and is now a very popular streaming platform focusing on independent cinema from around the world (think Netflix, but with films that matter). Recently, after renovating the space which used to house Odeon Opera, another Athenian legacy cinema downtown, Cinobo opened its first cinema Cinobo Opera. There, in honour of Ideal, the series of late-night screenings will continue to run while retaining its name. So it's like a story of a new generation of film lovers picking up where the older ones left off. Sounds ideal, doesn't it?
Ideal Cinema Nights kicks off with a mega-cult classic, David Lynch’s Lost Highway screened in a 4K restored version. Screenings start at 11.30 pm and are a great excuse to experience Athens after hours. This is the second series of late night screenings to take place in Athens, alongside the fantastic Midnight Express. Watch this space as more screenings are announced.
