Athens’ Polykatoikias 1930-1975. Formation of a Typology
Athens wouldn’t be the same without its polykatoikies—those distinctive apartment buildings that shape its skyline. But how did they come to define the city? Athens’ Polykatoikias 1930-1975: Formation of a Typology is an exhibition that delves into the evolution of this architectural phenomenon and the way it redefined urban living in the Greek capital.
The opening event brings together architect Kilian Schmitz-Hübsch, photographer Dimitris Kleanthis, and architect Myrto Kiourti for a conversation on how the polykatoikia became the backbone of postwar Athens, transforming it into the metropolis we know today. Based on the 2023 book Athens' Polykatoikias 1930-1975 by Schmitz-Hübsch and Kleanthis, the exhibition offers a closer look at the history, design, and impact of these buildings.
Come for the history, stay for the insider info, and leave with a new perspective on the city around you. And if you’re inspired, we suggest you take some time and explore—among others—the iconic polykatoikia of Fokionos Negri through our exciting curated audio walk with Google Greece.
