Lena Platonos: The Emperor's Nightingale
Here’s a gorgeous seasonal treat for both children and adults, with a timely message buried right at the heart of it. When the emperor of China becomes obsessed with an electronic nightingale that monotonously sings the same song, the real nightingale who first won his affections leaves the palace. Many years later, when the emperor is very sick and the electronic nightingale fails, the song of the real nightingale moves even Death. Greek electronic music whiz Lena Platonos transformed Hans Christen Anderson’s poignant fable, The Emperor’s Nightingale, into an operatic fairytale about technology versus authenticity. The Greek National Opera delivers the goods, with some pretty slick, all-immersive animations thrown in the mix. The production was such a hit on its first SNFCC run, it’s now been promoted to the main stage of the Stavros Niarchos Hall.
