Carlo Goldoni: The New House
Carlo Goldoni lived in Venice during the golden years of masks, but his work represents their decline. Comedia de l'arte at the time was struggling for the audience's laughter with grotesque jokes and Goldoni's perception of theatre was revolutionary for both Italian literature and European dramaturgy. His New House, was groundbreaking then and is still topical today. Newlyweds Anzoletto and Cecilia are moving into their new house. She is demanding, spoiled and fussy. He is penniless, loves her to death and unable to satisfy her demands. Money, social appearances and middle-class anxiety are the themes of this timeless comedy that's being staged for the first time by the National Theatre of Greece. English surtitles will be available every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
