On-line: Trojan Women by Euripides
On-line theatre performances are fast becoming a mainstay of our pandemic culture. But here’s one with a unique selling point that no self-respecting theatre buff should miss: Euripides’ Trojan Women, interpreted by the internationally-renowned director Theodoros Terzopoulos, and played out against the staggering backdrop of sacred Delphi. The work is Euripides’ third tragedy of a trilogy on the Trojan War and tracks the fates of the women of Troy after their city has fallen; their husbands slain; and their remaining families about to be seized as slaves. Even when viewed through the prism of your laptop screen – or chromecast onto your television – Delphi still holds centre-stage as one of Greece’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. With English sub-titles to guide you, Trojan Women is both a virtual travel treat and culture fix wrapped in one. The sell-out performance was originally presented at the Ancient Theatre of Delphi in 2018 as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage and is now offered up for our enjoyment by the Onassis Foundation's We Stay Close, Not Closed digital platform.
