Ubuntu – 5 Rooms from the Harry David Collection
The ideal of a collective humanity bound by a common spirit and purpose may elude us yet. But that doesn’t mean we’ll ever give up striving for it. Ubuntu is a beautiful South African term that keeps alive the dream of a shared human destiny. At a time when the issue of discrimination - racial or otherwise - is as urgent as ever, comes this rich trove of post-conceptual contemporary African art in all its expressive energy and diversity.
Spread out across 5 separately-curated rooms at the new EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art, the works address themes including: slavery, racist exploitation and apartheid, war, civil strife, hunger, cultural imperialism, the ecological exploitation of Africa, African rituals, the black body and its representations, the socio-political construction of skin colour, African history and memory, personal narratives and portraiture. The artists represented range from the internationally-established to young and emerging creators. Make a date with Ubuntu as your perfect excuse to check-out Athens' newest modern art hub, housed in the former Fix Brewery, one of the city's landmark buildings.
The exhibition will adhere to all public health advice.
