Crafts of the Sea
The influence of the Cyclades on Athens is more than just noticeable, from the picturesque Anafiotika neighbourhood cascading down the slope of the Acropolis to the impressive collection of the Museum of Cycladic Art. An exhibition titled Crafts of the Sea, running from July 4 to September 21 at the refurbished Goethe-Institut Athen building near Syntagma Square, aims to introduce another facet of Cycladic culture. This multimedia exhibition features historical material and contemporary photographic and audiovisual documentation from various islands in the Cyclades, such as Amorgos, Koufonisia, Paros, Santorini, and Syros. Organised by the Archipelagos Network, the Professional Fishing Association of Amorgos, and the Goethe-Institut Athen, the exhibition seeks to emphasise the connections between past and present maritime communities and to shed light on the significance and challenges of wooden shipbuilding, fishing, and navigation in the Cyclades.
