Novello Finotti: The Sensual Mysticism of Sculpture
There’s no shortage of great sculptures in Athens. From urban statues in squares and parks and exhibits in metro stations to the timeless figurines of the Museum of Cycladic Art, and of course Erechtheion’s Caryatids, there are plenty of pieces in the city to snap for your Instagram. This season the B&M Theocharakis Foundation, located a stone’s throw away from Syntagma Square, adds to the city’s collection by hosting a prestigious exhibition with works by the acclaimed Italian sculptor, Novello Finotti. Novello Finotti: The Sensual Mysticism of Sculpture includes 65 of his sculptures made from Carrara marble, black Belgian granite, and brass. The works on display showcase Finotti's style and technical mastery, spanning the breadth of his illustrious career. Described as a lyrical and dramatic artist whose sculptures communicate deep emotions, Finotti's art is all about exploring great existential questions and uncovering the essence of the world around us.
Over the years, Finotti's work has been exhibited at prestigious events and locations. These include the Venice Biennale, the Armory Gallery in New York, and the tomb of Pope John XXIII in St Peter's Basilica in Rome. This is the first time that his work has been shown in Athens, after having travelled from Matera in Italy as far as Busan in Korea. A comprehensive catalogue, with insights from leading art experts, accompanies the exhibition, which runs until early November.
