Renée Revah: Tehom
The Benaki Μuseum inaugurates a new and challenging exhibition entitled Tehom (which in biblical Hebrew means “primordial depth”) presenting the work of photographer Renée Revah. Photographs, videos and text bring to life the harrowing journey of Revah's family from Thessaloniki to Auschwitz presenting a story about confronting the past, seeking comfort amidst tragedy, and transforming pain into healing.
Central to the narrative is the loss of her family, save for her grandfather Albert Revah, who stands out as the lone survivor who found refuge in Athens. Throughout the war, he held onto hope, patiently awaiting the return of his loved ones. In his lifetime, he couldn't find the courage to visit the crime scene and with this project Revah promises to undertake that journey for him. She embarks on two emotional journeys to Birkenau and Auschwitz, feeling a deep connection with her grandfather at every turn, communicating with him in her mind. Shaped by the legacy of her family's experiences, her work is a fusion of personal memory and survivor testimony.
