Robert McCabe: Χαίρε Ξένε. In the Land of Dreams
You know those dreamy black-and-white photographs of 1950s Greece, depicting serene landscapes, untouched villages, everyday scenes, and people smiling naturally at the lens? You’ve seen them online, surely. Did you know that there’s a good chance these belong to Robert McCabe? The Acropolis Museum’s latest temporary exhibition, titled Χαίρε Ξένε. In the Land of Dreams (the first part translates to “Hello Stranger”), features 100 photographs by the American photographer in a new retrospective. McCabe first arrived in Greece in the 1950s and returned frequently to capture the beauty of authentic life and the spirit of a people looking forward to a better future. Inherently nostalgic and sometimes idealised, these 100 images present Greece as an untouched, beautiful, and authentic place despite the extreme poverty they sometimes depict. They preserve some of the most unique elements of Greece’s natural beauty and cultural heritage and can be seen in juxtaposition to the breathtaking collection of the main museum, offering an insightful and sensitive view of Greece’s more recent past.
