Six Women in Greek Tragedy
Missed out on tickets for this summer’s Athens Epidaurus Festival? Don’t fret! You can still get your dose of ancient Greek tragedy. Six Women in Greek Tragedy is a composition of ancient tragic plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides that focuses on female heroines; Medea, Electra, Antigone, Hecuba, Iphigenia and Alcestis. Under the Acropolis, in the beautiful garden of the Athens University History Museum in Plaka, director Panos Angelopoulos will bring these characters to life in an exploration of the place they hold in the works of the tragic poets, featuring a promising cast and live melodies of ancient instruments. Visitors can also check out the Ancient Greek Mask in Comedy & Tragedy exhibition, curated by renowned artist Yiannis Zimianitis, who will also provide guided tours. With over 30 years of experience and 1200 original masks under his belt, Zimianitis showcases the history and significance of theatrical masks, tracing their origins to the cult rituals of Dionysus.
