The Greek Schubert
“I, unhappy Atlas, must bear a world,
the whole world of sorrows.
I bear the unbearable, and my heart
would break within my body.”
The poems of German poet Heinrich Heine had no titles. That was until Franz Schubert wrote music based on them. Schubert was fascinated by Greek mythology and the tale of Titan Atlas, who was condemned to carry the world on his shoulders (Der Atlas is Shubert title for Heine’s poem we cite above), is just one of the many Greek fables that inspired the great Austrian composer.
Internationally acclaimed baritone Aris Argyris will make his debut at the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera, in the company of pianist Peter Bortfeldt and will be presenting sixteen of Schubert's compositions relating to Greek mythology. Schubert’s music brilliantly highlights the themes of tragedy and wonder that are omnipresent in Greek myths. Paired with the sensitive and meditative side of Argyris, it practically guarantees an unforgettable evening.
