Acropolis Redux Photography Exhibition
They’ve inspired both imitation and controversy down the ages. Now, two of the Acropolis’ most famous sculptures—the Erechtheum Caryatid and the Parthenon frieze—are the focus of a new exhibition by British photographer Ian Walker for the American School of Classical Studies. Walker has captured on film the enduring echoes of these two ancient pieces as they appear in various different guises: from London housing projects to a Cleveland mansion. The display is divided into two groups of photographs with a common theme—how the sculptures which adorned the temples on the Acropolis in the 5th century BC were disseminated in the modern world and became models for western art. Caryatid focuses on the standing female figure taken from the Erechtheum by Lord Elgin and now housed in the British Museum, inspiring the creation of neo-classical caryatids in London; while Frieze highlights the many casts that have been made of the 524-foot relief that once surrounded the Parthenon.
