Safe Mode: Amplified Realities
Think of your computer crashing and seeing that dreaded blue screen of error. When in a crisis, our devices function in “safe mode”, a compromising state between security and independence. It’s their way of coping, we reckon, by choosing safety over freedom of action.
That’s also the starting point of the exhibition “Safe Mode: Amplified Realities” by TILT Platform. Local and international artists and collectives explore what happens when people or even societies as a whole enter “safe mode” due to conflict, environmental destruction, or a state of crisis, be it social or financial. What happens when safety takes priority until better days come? Hosted in three spaces, Project Gallery, MISC Athens, and BHD Hub, the exhibition features installations, video art, photography, painting, sculpture and sound art, all approaching this burning question of our times. Several of the artworks put the spotlight on the Arab world, where governments impose “safe mode” restrictions on their citizens, during times of war and other erratic periods.
