Dimitris Papaioannou: INK
A great experimental Greek stage director, choreographer, and visual artist, Dimitris Papaioannou was, amongst other captivating contemporary dance performances, creative director for the stunning opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
His latest show, INK, which premiered at the Carignano for Torinodanza festival last year, is back in Athens for five performances just before its tour concludes at the historic Théâtre de la Ville in Paris. Papaioannou himself, sharing the stage with dancer extraordinaire Šuka Horn, takes the lead role—something he only does once every ten years.
In INK, Papaioannou does not stray away from his love for natural elements and naked bodies. His protagonists dance in a chiaroscuro setting with water and a disco ball as the only props. Their duet soon turns to a duel. What happens when they intrude into each other's worlds, when their orders are upset by each other’s presence? How easily can tenderness become torture?
Last year’s tickets were sold out in a matter of minutes so don’t expect it to go any differently this time.
